Bulls' Doubles Duo Steps Up Play

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's tennis program continued its positive play with a four-match sweep of the competition at the St. Bonaventure/NIKE Men's Tennis Fall Classic, held at St. Bonaventure over the weekend.

"All of their hard work and efforts allow them to now work as a team," said Head Coach Russ Crispell.

UB was once again led by the play of freshman Fery Kasiman (Jakarta, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep). Playing first singles for the first time in a dual match, Kasiman finished the weekend with a record of 4-0. In what proved to be the Bulls' toughest match of the weekend, Kasiman defeated Mark Gorski of St. Bonaventure for one of UB's two singles victories. Junior Sean Kelley (Gorham, NY/Marcus Whitman), notched the other victory for the Bulls, 6-0, 6-2 over Eric Coons.

Junior Tim Powell (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) and sophomore Brent Persia (Pembroke, NY/Pembroke), pulled out a three-set victory, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6, to give UB the 4-3 win against St. Bonaventure, on Saturday. The duo of Powell and Persia did not lose any of their matches this weekend, securing two points every match for the Bulls.

"They stayed focused the entire match, and were able to pull out the win," said Crispell. "They played the match of thier career. They both had a great weekend of play"

UB's final competition on Saturday was Niagara University. The Bulls handled the Purple Eagles, 7-0. Crispell's squad swept all of the matches picking up wins from all singles competitors. Picking up singles victories were seniors Budi Susanto (Bali, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep), 6-4,6-4, and David Emihovich (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North), 7-5, 6-1. Emihovich went 3-1 on the weekend dropping his lone match to Ryan Magee of St. Bonaventure.

Also going 3-1 on the weekend was UB's third singles player junior Justin Brtko (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East). Brtko lost his opening match 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, to Markus Arvaja of St. Bonaventure, but bounced back to take three-straight victories.

On Sunday, UB faced Youngstown State and St. Francis (PA). The Bulls won both matches with strong singles performances. UB defeated Youngstown State 7-0 and then pulled out a 6-1 victory over St. Francis (PA).

The Bulls next compete on Friday, Oct. 6, for a match against St. Peters College at the UB Tennis Center. With the Saturday, Oct. 21, match being rescheduled in the spring season, the Bulls' last fall competition will be against Youngstown State on Sunday, Oct. 15 at the UB Tennis Center.
