Bulls Claim Eight Titles at UB/Niagara Invitational

BUFFALO, NY – Winning eight of 12 matches over Niagara on Saturday, the University at Buffalo men's tennis team completed play at the UB/Niagara Invitational at the University Tennis Center. The Bulls finished the non-scoring meet with 19 wins out of 24 contests as UB took 11 matches against York on Friday.

UB also had six singles flight champions and a pair of doubles flight winners with Niagara taking the other two doubles crowns and York winning the top two singles titles.

Against Niagara, UB lost the top two matches, but won the next six. Juan Carlos Wynter (Puebla, Mexico/American School) needed a 10-4 victory in his third-set super-tiebreaker to defeat Joe Heckley, 2-6, 6-2, 10-4. Wynter won the number five flight based on his 2-0 mark over the weekend.

Other singles flight winners for UB included Kirill Kolomyts (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) at number three, Kristof Custers (Balen, Belguim/European School of Mol) at number four, Mitch Zenaty (Fairport, NY/Fairport) at number six, Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco) at number seven and Eric Rothstein (Phoenixville, PA/Great Valley) at number eight. All five went 2-0 in their matches against York and Niagara.

UB and Niagara split the doubles wins on Saturday with NU taking the top two matches and UB claiming the bottom pair.

Doubles flight winners for the Bulls included Kolomyts and Lluis at number three and Ezra Bernstein (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) at number four.

York's Mikhail Lew and Tomohiro Ono won the top two singles flights, respectively. Niagara's top two doubles combos, Marc Dickinson and Roman Silin at number one and Joe Heckley and Steve Kopf at number two picked up the lone titles for the Purple Eagles.

In Saturday's early match, York scored seven wins to Niagara's five. The two teams split the doubles matches with two wins apiece, while York took five of the eight singles matches.

The Bulls are back in action next weekend at the Dartmouth Invitational. The eight-team event begins on Friday, October 3 and continues through the weekend.
