Strong Competition Gives Bulls Workout at Dartmouth

The Bulls completed the Volkl Shootout at Dartmouth College against local rival St. Bonaventure, Division III powerhouse Williams College and the host Big Green with players competing in eight singles divisions and four doubles divisions. UB's newcomers, freshman Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) and sophomore Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) led the way for the Bulls with identical 3-1 singles marks. In doubles play, Singh Panthlia teamed with Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) to take three victories, including two in the A Division, while Stane and Mike Zappone (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) went 2-1 overall, including a pair of wins in the D Division.

Three Bulls sport identical 5-2 singles records to lead the Bulls in victories during the fall campaign. Junior Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) went 2-2 at the Dartmouth meet while Singh Panthlia and Stane each earned three wins against a single loss. Two other players, senior Matt Kennedy (Mississauga, Ontario/Erindale) and junior Alejandro Galindo (Torreon, Mexico/Preparatoria Tec) are at the break-even mark. Kennedy is 3-3 while Galindo got his first taste of action at Dartmouth and is 1-1.

Doubles Duo Off to Quick Start

UB's doubles combination of Hadisubroto and Singh Panthlia has started strong in 2005. The duo has now posted six wins against just one loss in their two tournaments. Their six wins and seven matches lead the squad in both categories. Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna (NY)) and Kennedy are 1-4 in five matches, while the combos of Rockman and Stane and Stane and Zappone are both 2-1.

Red Flash Come Calling in Dual Meet Opener

The Bulls kick off the dual meet schedule with their annual match against St. Francis (PA) of the Northeast Conference. The Bulls and the Red Flash will get underway at UB's University Tennis Club at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 1. The UB women also host St. Francis on Saturday morning with an 11:00 am start time. UB rolled past the Red Flash, 7-0, in last season's match in Buffalo on October 2. UB did not drop a set to the visitors in the match as the top four players allowed St. Francis to claim just two games in each match while Kennedy, at number five, and Alant, at number six, scored "double-bagel" 6-0, 6-0 wins over their opponents. UB's doubles teams also swept their three matches with a pair of 8-0 shutouts at numbers one and two.
