Bulls Net Top Results at Dartmouth Shootout

The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team saw some stiff competition at the Dartmouth Volkl Shootout over the weekend scoring five singles wins each over Boston University and Tufts and taking victories at the top two slots in the five contested singles matches against Division III power Williams. UB went 7-2 in three doubles matches against the three teams in the hidden duals format competition. Other teams competing included Niagara, St. Bonaventure, Army and host Dartmouth.

Senior Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) became the all-time winningest singles player in team history on Saturday as he turned in an unblemished 3-0 mark in his weekend matches. Rockman, playing in the number one slot, defeated Boston University’s Barrett Wolf, 6-2, 6-3 on Friday to tie the school record of 69 singles wins in a career. Rockman powered past Tufts’ Corey Keller on Saturday, 6-1, 6-1, to pass former player and current UB assistant coach Nick Zieziula to claim the top spot with his 70th career victory. He kept the strong weekend going with an easy 6-3, 6-1 win over Williams’ Daniel Greenberg, 6-3, 6-1. Rockman is now 5-1 this season.

Singh Panthlia Undefeated in Return to Lineup

Junior Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) returned to the lineup after missing the St. Bonaventure Invitational and scored three victories. He earned straight set wins over Boston University’s Miron Nissim and Tufts’ Vinh Tran to open play. On Sunday, he needed a third-set super-tiebreaker to defeat Williams’ Gary Simonette. The pair split the opening two sets with Singh Panthlia taking the opener, 6-3, before Simonette tied the match with a 6-2 win of his own. In the super-tiebreaker, Singh Panthlia prevailed with a 10-5 win to take the match. Singh Panthlia also combined with Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) to go undefeated in three doubles tilts, including a 9-7 win over the Williams duo of Nick Lebedoff and Bret Thacher.

Need a Partner?

With just five able bodies on the UB squad, the Bulls needed to put together a makeshift tandem for its third doubles team. Redshirt freshman Eric Rothstein (Phoenixville, PA/Great Valley) played three doubles matches with Dartmouth’s Charlie Dunn. The makeshift duo went 2-1 in the number three slot, defeating opponents from Boston University and Tufts while dropping their match against a pair from Williams.

Long Rest Awaits Bulls

The Bulls won’t hit the court for competition again until October 19 when they head to Philadelphia for the ITA Regional Championship matches. Mike Rockman reached the round of 32 at last year’s tournament while the doubles tandem of Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) and Nikesh Singh Panthlia scored a first-round victory before falling in the next round.
