HANOVER, NH – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team finished play at the Dartmouth Volkl Shootout on Sunday with singles play against Division III power Williams taking victories at the top two slots in the five contested matches.

Against a Williams team that has consistently reached the NCAA Division III national quarterfinals and has won three NCAA titles, UB scored victories from senior Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) and junior Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School).

Playing in the number one slot, Rockman easily defeated Daniel Greenberg, 6-3, 6-1. The win was Rockman’s third of the weekend and was the 71st victory of his career. Rockman became UB’s all-time winningest player in singles with his victory on Saturday over Tufts’ Corey Keller. Rockman eclipsed current assistant coach Nick Zieziula (69) for the top spot and is now 5-1 this season.

Singh Panthlia, in the number two hole, needed a third-set super-tiebreaker to defeat Gary Simonette. The pair split the opening two sets with Singh Panthlia taking the opener, 6-3, before Simonette tied the match with a 6-2 win of his own. In the super-tiebreaker, Singh Panthlia prevailed with a 10-5 win to take the match.

The Bulls dropped the numbers three, four and five matches, however, with the number three match also being decided in a super-tiebreaker. Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside), playing number three, fell to Ted Haley, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-0). At number four, Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) lost in straight sets to Rick Devlin, 7-5, 6-1 while at number five, redshirt freshman Eric Rothstein (Phoenixville, PA/Great Valley) dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Karol Furmaga.

The Bulls completed the weekend winning 12 of 15 singles matches and seven of the nine doubles matches played on Friday and Saturday. UB saw competition from Boston University, Tufts and Williams at the tournament. Other teams competing included Niagara, St. Bonaventure, Army and host Dartmouth.
