BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's tennis program began its 2000-01 campaign with an impressive 4-3 victory over downstate-rival Marist College, Sunday at the UB Tennis Center, Ellicott Complex.

UB began the match sluggish dropping its first and second singles matches 8-1, and 8-5 respectfully. The third singles tandem of sophomore, Brent Persia (Pembroke, NY/Pembroke) and junior Tim Powell (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) notched an 8-2 victory over thier opponents.

The Bulls dominated the singles competition, capturing four of the seven matches. UB posted wins at the first, second, fourth and sixth singles slots. Playing first singles, senior, Budi Susanto (Bali, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) notched a three-set victory to seal the win for the Bulls, 7-6, 4-6, 6-4. Freshman, Fery Kasiman (Jakarta, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) won his second singles match, 6-1, 6-3.

Junior, Justin Brtko (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) and Persia also posted singles victories 6-2, 6-3 for Brtko and a hard-fought three-set, 6-4, 6-7,6-4 win for Persia.

The Bulls will travel to Brown University this weekend, Sept. 22-24 to compete in the Brown Invitational. UB next returns home on Friday, Oct. 6, for weekend matches against Rider, St. Peters College and Loyola.
