Bulls Open Strong at St. Bonaventure Classic

The St. Bonaventure Fall Classic gave the Bulls some stiff competition over the three days as the men's tennis team hit the courts for the first time this season. The tournament was played in a hidden duals format on Friday and Saturday and individual matches on Sunday with no flight winners or team champions crowned.

Senior Matt Kennedy (Mississauga, Ontario/Erindale) won all three of his individual matches, including a three-set thriller on Sunday to lead the Bulls. Junior Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) also went undefeated with victories in two matches and scoring a third win by default.

Kennedy needed the full three sets to down St. Bonaventure's Dejan Stankovic in Sunday's finale. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Kennedy came on to drop his opponent with identical 7-5 scores in the second and third sets. Kennedy had an easier time in his opening matches, downing Niagara's Joe Dante, 6-0, 6-2, on Friday and Cleveland State's Steve Wipprecht, 6-1, 6-0 on Saturday.

Rockman also needed to rally from a set down on Sunday to defeat St. Bonaventure's Alejandro Nery. Rockman opened the match with a 6-2 loss in the first set. He then gained control of the match, allowing Nery just four games in the final two sets, winning the second and third sets, 6-2, 6-2. Rockman downed Niagara's Justin McConkey, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4, Friday before gaining a default victory on Saturday.

Doubles Squad Scores Three Wins

The doubles team of Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) and Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) also finished the classic with a 3-0 mark as the only UB tandem to play more than one match together.

Hadisubroto and Singh Panthlia rolled to an undefeated doubles weekend by defeating Ryan Trapp and Jason Trapp of Youngstown State, 8-2, on Sunday. The UB pair also registered a 9-8 win over Marc Dickinson and McConkey of Niagara on Saturday and opened with another victory over the Trapp brothers, 8-1, on Friday.

Dartmouth Invitational is Calling

UB travels to Hanover, NH next weekend for the Dartmouth Invitational. Play begins on Friday, September 16 and concludes on Sunday, September 18. The Bulls are well-familiar with the courts in New Hampshire after playing two tournaments in Hanover last season. At the Big Green Invitational last November, Rockman paired with Princeton's Jonathan Leslie to win the B doubles title.
