Bulls Find Success at St. Bonaventure Invite

The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team picked up championships in the top two flights to open the fall tournament season at the St. Bonaventure Fall Classic, which concluded Sunday afternoon. Buffalo won 19 of the 26 matches in singles and doubles play over the weekend competition against St. Francis (PA), Youngstown State and the host Bonnies.

Starakiewicz, Mazzetto Claim Singles Titles

The Bulls scored two singles flight championships at the St. Bonaventure Invitational. UB sophomore transfer Wojciech Starakiewicz (Warsaw, Poland/Miguel de Cervantes) and junior Marcelo Mazzetto won the first and second flights, respectively, going 3-0 in their singles matches without dropping a set.

Starakiewicz, who joined the Bulls this summer after playing last season at Tulsa, scored three wins including a 6-3, 6-3 triumph in his first match against Tariq Ismail of Youngstown State. Mazzetto, second on the team last season with 17 singles wins, got a strong start to the season with his three victories. Mazzetto finished the weekend with a 7-6, 6-2 win over St. Bonaventure’s Diego Valdenegro.

Pair of Doubles Duos Pick Up Two Wins Apiece

The Bulls had a pair of doubles tandems finish play with 2-1 records. Mazzetto paired with Kirill Kolomyts at number one while the number two combo of Starakiewicz and freshman George Tibil (Bucharest, Romania/Institut des Dames de Marie) also went 2-1. Mazzetto and Kolomyts, who finished last season at 15-6 as UB’s top pair, scored wins over their opponents from St. Bonaventure and St. Francis before falling on Sunday to a Youngstown State pair by an 8-5 count. Starakiewicz and Tibil, playing as the number two combo, defeated their St. Francis and Youngstown State opponents while falling against the Bonnies.

Tournament Schedule Continues

After sitting out this coming week, the Bulls hit the courts at two venues for tournaments starting on September 18. UB will travel to Princeton, NJ for the Princeton Invitational while the Bulls will also participate in the Niagara Doubles Invitational.
