Susanto Earns MAC Sportsmanship Honors

Bulls' tennis standout wins Jack Vredevelt Award

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo men's tennis standout Budi Susanto (Bali, Indonesia/Hilton Head (SC) Prep) has been named the winner of the Jack Vredevelt Sportsmanship Award as selected by the Mid-American Conference.

Budi Susanto
Susanto, a senior business major, posted a 15-11 record for the Bulls, primarily playing first singles in the 2000-01 season. He also teamed with Fery Kasiman (Jakarta, Indonesia/Hilton Head (SC) Prep) to form UB's top doubles combination, posting an 11-9 mark during the season. Susanto also represented the Bulls at last fall's prestigious Rolex Invitational Tournament in both singles and doubles play. A three-year player for the Bulls, Susanto completed his career with a 38-34 singles mark and a 33-37 doubles record, often facing the top player of the opposing team.

"Budi exemplifies what sportsmanship is all about," said head coach Russ Crispell. "Win or lose, he is one of the most gracious competitors I've ever had the pleasure to coach."

The Jack Vredevelt Sportsmanship Award is presented to the player who displays the most outstanding sportsmanship in MAC competition. The award is named in honor of the former Western Michigan player and coach who won MAC singles titles for four consecutive years from 1952-55 and was honored as MAC Coach of the Year on four different occasions.

UB's men's tennis team began the 2000-01 season with an undefeated fall season and a school-record 10-0 start. The Bulls finished the year with a 14-7 overall record and an 0-5 MAC record. UB was defeated by Bowling Green, 4-0, in the first round of the MAC Championships.
