The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team was eliminated from the Mid-American Conference Championships on Thursday afternoon with a 5-1 loss to third-seeded Toledo. The Bulls finished the season with a 6-17 overall record.

The lone point for the Bulls against the Rockets was a singles victory from senior Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School), in his final match at UB. Singh Panthlia, playing second singles, defeated Toledo’s Chris Clark in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The win was the 24th singles triumph for Singh Panthlia this season, tying him with current UB assistant coach Nick Zieziula for the second-most singles wins in one year.

The Bulls finished the season with three players posting double figures in wins. Senior Nikesh Singh Panthlia led the Bulls with his 24-10 mark, the 24 wins, tying him with Nick Zieziula for the second-most victories in a single season. Sophomore Kirill Kolomyts (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) and freshman Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) each posted 15 wins in singles action. Kolomyts finished with a 15-11 mark, although he missed a few weeks of playing time due to an injury in March. Mazzetto nearly broke even with a 15-16 record, his final loss coming in the first singles match against Toledo in the MAC Tournament.

Capping a Career

With Buffalo’s elimination from the MAC Tournament, senior Nikesh Singh Panthlia’s collegiate career came to a close. Singh Panthlia will be regarded as one of UB’s top players in its Division I era. In just three seasons, he posted an overall singles and doubles record of 111-74 for a .600 winning percentage. The 111 wins are third on UB’s all-time victory total behind Nick Zieziula (134) and Mike Rockman (126). His 62 singles wins rank him third while his 49 doubles victories places him fifth in that category.
