BUFFALO, NY – Quarterfinal action of the 2009 Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Championships was completed Thursday afternoon with Ball State and Northern Illinois advancing. Ball State defeated the host University at Buffalo, 4-0, while Northern Illinois scored a 4-1 victory over Chicago State.

In the opening match of the day, played indoors at the Village Glen Tennis Center, the number four seed Ball State defeated fifth-seeded Buffalo, 4-0. Ball State (12-11) scored the opening doubles point with victories in the number two and three matches. The number one match, featuring UB's top combination of Marcelo Mazzetto and Kirill Kolomyts was tied 6-6 when play was abandoned after the Cardinals clinched the first point.

UB (7-11) fell in the number one, four and five matches, all in straight sets. Jorge Rodriguez of Ball State scored the match's clinching point with a 6-3, 6-4 win over UB's Kristof Custers. UB's Alex Kalinin won the first set of the number three contest against Cliff Morrison in a 10-8 tiebreaker. The two were tied 1-1 in the second set when play was abandoned.

Moving outdoors to UB's University Tennis Club for the second quarterfinal match, Northern Illinois (8-8) rolled into the semifinal round with a 4-1 victory over Chicago State (4-13). Against a depleted Chicago State lineup, the Huskes needed just one doubles win and two singles wins, both by 6-0, 6-0 margins to defeat the Cougars.

Ball State will face top-seeded Western Michigan (16-8) in the first semifinal at 10:00 am on Friday. Northern Illinois meets second-seeded Toledo (17-10) in the other semifinal at 2:30 pm. With pleasant weather in the forecast, both matches are slated for play outdoors at the University Tennis Club.
