FORT WAYNE, IN – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team won its third straight match on Sunday with a 5-2 win over IPFW in Mid-American Conference play. The Bulls are now 11-7 overall and close out the MAC slate with a 2-3 mark. The Mastodons fall to 11-15, 0-5 MAC, completing their regular season.

UB needed to rally to win the opening doubles point. With the teams splitting two matches, the clincher proved to be the number two match. UB’s team of Matt Kennedy (Mississauga, Ontario/Erindale) and Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) won the final three games to defeat Carlos Gonzalez and Arturo Salgado, 9-7. UB trailed 7-6 with IPFW serving for the match before picking up the last three games.

In the number one match, UB’s Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) and Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) downed Landry Nzudie and Nabil Mourad Filho, 8-3. At number three, Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) and Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna (NY)) fell to Daniel Jackson and Nathan Jones, 8-5.

The Bulls won four of the six singles matches. Rockman rolled past Nzudie, 6-2, 6-4, putting the junior in second place on UB’s all-time wins list with 65, passing current women’s assistant coach Fery Kasiman. Singh Panthlia needed three sets to down Mourad Filho, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1. At number three, UB’s Hadisubroto suffered a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Gonzalez. Number four Stane took a third-set super-tiebreaker to defeat Hermann Kuschke, 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5). In the number five match, Kennedy has little trouble with Salgado, winning 6-1, 6-1. Alant, at number six, went to a third-set super-tiebreaker but fell to Jones. Alant won the opening set, 6-2, but lost a second-set tiebreaker, 7-4, before falling, 10-6, in the super-tiebreaker.

The Bulls travel to Binghamton for a non-conference match on Friday, April 21 to close out the regular season. The MAC tournament starts April 27. The Bulls currently hold the fourth spot in the six-team race.
