Bulls Split in Indiana to End Regular Season
The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team finished the regular season with a pair of matches in Muncie, IN. UB fell to Ball State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in its final Mid-American Conference match of the regular season. On Monday, the Bulls rallied for a victory over top junior college program Vincennes, 6-1. UB is one of only two Division I schools to beat Vincennes this year as the Trailblazers (24-4) had racked up four victories against the highest level of NCAA men’s tennis. The Bulls finish the regular season at 6-16 overall and are 0-5 in league play with the MAC Championships remaining on the schedule.
Kolomyts Goes Undefeated During Weekend
Kirill Kolomyts | UB sophomore Kirill Kolomyts (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) went undefeated in his four matches during the Indiana trip to lead the Bulls. Against Ball State, he scored a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jorge Rodriguez in the number four match. Kolomyts also teamed with Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco) for a win at third doubles as the UB tandem defeated Shaun Bussert and Joe Vallee in a tiebreaker, 7-3, to gain the 8-7 win. Against Vincennes, Kolomyts teamed with Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) to defeat David Jackson and Chris King by an 8-5 score in the number one match. Kolomyts also moved up to the third spot to score a “double-bagel” win over King, 6-0, 6-0, in singles play. Since returning from an injury that sidelined him for much of March, Kolomyts has won his last three doubles matches and three of his last four singles contests.
Closing Out The Career
Nikesh Singh Panthlia | With his 23 singles wins this season, senior Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) is third on UB’s list of singles victories in one season. Singh Panthlia trails only current UB assistant coach Nick Zieziula, who posted 24 wins in 2003-04 and Mike Rockman, who tallied 27 in 2004-05.
Time For The MAC Championships
While the rest of the MAC squads have one more weekend of regular season play remaining, UB will sit out the weekend in preparation of next weekend’s MAC Championships in DeKalb, IL starting April 25. The Bulls are already assured of the sixth seed and will meet the number three seed in the first round. Ball State and Toledo are tied for second in the MAC and meet on Saturday. The winner will gain the second seed and a first-round bye, while the loser will fall to third and face the Bulls in the first round.
