MUNCIE, IN – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team finished the 2008 regular season Monday afternoon with a 6-1 win over Vincennes University at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. The Bulls are now 6-16 overall with the Mid-American Conference Championships scheduled for next weekend.

The Bulls opened the match with two doubles wins. The number one squad of Kirill Kolomyts (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) and Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) defeated David Jackson and Chris King by an 8-5 score. The number three duo of Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Tabasco de Americano) and Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) downed Jaime Esteban and Tony Kanavos by an identical 8-5 score. In the number two match, UB’s duo of Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) and Juan Carlos Wynter (Puebla, Mexico/American School) fell in a tiebreaker to Vincennes’ Binky Nikou and Justin Harlow.

UB closed out the contest with singles wins in five of six matches, quickly winning the first three contests that concluded in straight sets. Kolomyts scored a “double-bagel” win over King, 6-0, 6-0, in the number three match. Wynter, at number five, downed Harlow, 6-0, 6-2. Singh Panthlia gave the Bulls the fourth and deciding point with his win over Jackson, winning the second set in a tiebreaker.

The remaining three matches went to third sets. Ezra Bernstein (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) rallied to take the final two sets in downing Charles Hodge, 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. The lone blemish to the singles sweep for the Bulls was in the number four match as Stane fell to Nikou, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4.

The match concluded with Mazzetto, in the number one match against Esteban, going past the 10-point threshold in the super-tiebreaker to claim the win. Mazzetto defeated his opponent 14-12 in the 10-point breaker to give the Bulls the match.

Lluis also picked up a singles win in exhibition play with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Jimmy Dunseith.

With the win, the Bulls are one of just two Division I programs to defeat the Trailblazers this season. Vincennes, now 24-4, is 4-2 against the top NCAA level of men’s tennis with losses to the Bulls and Austin Peay of the Ohio Valley Conference in their spring opener in February.

UB will now have an 11-day preparation period before the MAC Championships get underway. The Bulls will be seeded sixth when the tournament begins in DeKalb, IL on April 25.
