Bulls Fall to Huskies

The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-2 loss to visiting Mid-American Conference opponent Northern Illinois at the Miller Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls are 7-10 (1-4 MAC) as they head into the league championships in less than two weeks.

Mazzetto Takes Doubles and Singles Matches

The Bulls scored the opening doubles point as they picked up a pair of victories over the Huskies. The number one duo of Marcelo Mazzetto and Kirill Kolomyts scored a tiebreaker win over Pawel Poziomski and Jimmy Chu. The UB tandem trailed 5-2 in the tiebreaker before scoring seven of the next nine points to win the match and secure the opening point. Mazzetto also won his singles match as he needed to rally from a set down to claim a second-set tiebreaker and third-set super-tiebreaker. After falling in the opening set to Jurica Grubisic, 7-5, Mazzetto defeated his opponent, 11-9 in the second-set tiebreaker and scored a 10-7 super-tiebreaker win.

Tiebreakers Abound

Several of the matches against Northern Illinois required tiebreakers of one sort or another on Sunday. The Bulls clinched the doubles point with a 9-7 tiebreaker win at number one by Mazzetto and Kolomyts. In singles play, Mazzetto, Kolomyts, Kristof Custers and Octavian Stane all needed seven-point tiebreakers in either the first or second set, or in Stane’s match, both sets. Mazzetto won a second-set tiebreaker over Grubisic at first singles. Kolomyts, at number two and Custers at number four, lost first-set tiebreakers. In the number five match, Stane and Jimmy Chu traded tiebreakers with Chu winning the first-set breaker, 9-7, before Stane took the second-set breaker, 7-3. Both Mazzetto and Stane went to third-set supertiebreakers with Mazzetto claiming a 10-7 win but Stane falling by a 10-6 count.

Homes Sweet Home

With Sunday’s match at the Miller Tennis Center, the Bulls have called four Western New York tennis facilities are home venues this season. UB played the UB/Niagara Invite outdoors on their home court of the University Tennis Center and expect to use the outdoor courts for the upcoming MAC Championships. The Bulls also utilized their regular home indoor courts at the Village Glen Tennis Center during February. UB faced Ball State at the South Towns Tennis Center in Orchard Park on April 3 and conclued the regular season against Northern Illinois at the Miller Tennis Center in Williamsville.
