WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team closed out the regular season with a 5-2 loss to visiting Mid-American Conference opponent Northern Illinois at the Miller Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The Bulls are 7-10 (1-4 MAC) as they head into the league championships in less than two weeks. The Bulls scored the opening doubles point as they picked up a pair of victories over the Huskies (6-9, 2-2 MAC). The number one duo of Marcelo Mazzetto and Kirill Kolomyts scored a tiebreaker win over Pawel Poziomski and Jimmy Chu. The UB tandem trailed 5-2 in the tiebreaker before scoring seven of the next nine points to win the match and secure the opening point. UB's number two duo of Octavian Stane and Kristof Custers downed Jurica Grubisic and Shaun Stewart, 8-5. Mazzetto won his singles match as he needed to rally from a set down to claim a second-set tiebreaker and third-set super-tiebreaker. After falling in the opening set to Grubisic, 7-5, Mazzetto defeated his opponent, 11-9 in the second-set tiebreaker and scored a 10-7 super-tiebreaker win. Two other matches went three sets with the Bulls falling in both contests. Stane and Chu battled in the number five match, trading tiebreakers, before Chu won the super-breaker, 10-6. Mitch Zenaty won the opening set of the number six match against Ross VanderPloeg, but dropped the final two sets, 6-4, 6-2. The Bulls return to action as the host school in this season's MAC Men's Tennis Championship starting April 23.
