Bulls Split Weekend Matches in Michigan

The University at Buffalo men's tennis team traveled to Kalamazoo, MI for a two-match weekend slate and split their contests against ranked opponents. The Bulls opened with a 5-2 loss to Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan, ranked 50th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. UB then jumped back into the win column, breaking a nine-match losing skid with a 7-0 win at Kalamazoo College. The Hornets are ranked 13th in the latest ITA Division III poll.

Against Western Michigan on Friday, UB's lone victories came in singles matches and both were decided in third-set super-tiebreakers. In the number four match, senior Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) knocked off Alex Birchmeier. Hadisubroto won the first set in a tiebreaker and then scored a 10-6 win in the third-set super-tiebreaker for the 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) triumph. In the number five match, senior Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna (NY)) scored a similar victory to Hadisubroto's. Alant defeated Bryan Norville in a first set tiebreaker to gain the upper hand in the contest. After Norville forced the super-tiebreaker, Alant was able to score an 11-9 win in the third set. The final score was 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (11-9).

On Saturday, UB faced Kalamazoo College, with the Bulls sweeping all six singles matches with the top five going to UB in straight sets. Freshman Kirill Kolomytes (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) scored the most impressive singles win with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Cyrus Jadun in the number three match. Sophomore Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) needed a third-set super-tiebreaker to dispose of Luke Marker in the number six match, 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9).

Play the Numbers Six, One and Three

The numbers to play, six, one and three came up quite often in UB’s match with Kalamazoo. Of the 13 singles sets played on Saturday, six were decided by 6-1 scores (with the Bulls winning five) and four others consisted of 6-3 scores (with UB winning all four). Junior Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) and senior Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) hit the daily double with both posting 6-3 and 6-1 wins in their sets. Singh Panthlia defeated Alex Kempster, 6-1, 6-3, while Rockman reversed the scores with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Jason Brown.

Squad Idle For Upcoming Weekend

The Bulls get a break in the schedule this week. The team is not in action this weekend as they prepare for their home schedule finales on April 13 and 14. On Friday, April 13, the Bulls will host Northern Illinois. UB then has a pair of matches slated for Saturday, April 14 as they host IPFW in the final MAC match of the regular season at 1:00 pm and then face in-state rival Marist that evening at 7:00 pm to conclude the home schedule.
