Men's Tennis No Longer Perfect After Two Losses

Bulls Drop MAC Match to Bowling Green and Non-Conference Matchup to St. Bonaventure

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's tennis team ended its quest for a perfect season this weekend with two losses, to Bowling Green and St. Bonaventure, in Olean, NY. However, the Bulls did pick up a victory against Temple and improved their record to 11-2, 0-1 in the Mid-American Conference for the year.

In the Bulls' first MAC match of the season, the Falcons swept the singles matches and claimed the doubles point with two wins, at second and third doubles.

Senior Budi Susanto (Bali, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) and sophomore Fery Kasiman (Jakarta, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) pulled out a 9-8 victory over Vitek Wild and Peter Gardouyi at first doubles. Wild defeated Susanto 2-6, 5-7 at first singles, while Kasiman lost a three-set match to Nick Woxley, 4-6, 6-3, 6-7 (10-12).

Junior captain Justin Brtko (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) and senior Dave Emihovich (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) fell to the Falcon's duo at second doubles, 8-1. Brtko lost in his third-singles matchup, 6-3, 6-2, while Emihovich lost at fifth singles, 6-2, 6-1, to Micael Lopez Acevado.

Brandon Gabel defeated Sean Kelley (Gorham, NY/Marcus Whitman) at fourth singles, 6-3, 6-1. Sophomore Brent Persia (Pembroke, NY/Pembroke) and junior Tim Powell (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) suffered an 8-2 defeat at third doubles. Persia lost to Gardouyi, 6-1, 6-1, at sixth singles.

"The loss against Bowling Green was about respect," said head coach Russ Crispell. "We gained respect from our MAC opponents. Although the overall team score was 7-0, the individual matches were much closer."

The Bulls rebounded with a win over the Owls from Temple University. UB took four of the six singles matches and one doubles match for the 4-3 victory.

Susanto and Kasiman recorded victories at first and second singles, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3 and 6-4, 7-6, respectively. Additionally Kelley and Powell notched wins at fifth and sixth singles. Kelley recorded a 6-1, 6-3 win while Powell recorded a 7-5, 6-3 win.

The lone Bulls' win in doubles came from Powell and Kelley, who tallied an 8-1 victory.

"This was a great comeback by our entire singles lineup," said Crispell. "Susanto's win over Temple's number one was huge. To beat a player of that caliber reflects Susanto's hard work ethic."

In their third match of the weekend, the Bulls dropped a 5-2 decision to the Bonnies.

"When we lost the doubles point, the team knew they had a very difficult task to win four out of six singles matches," said Crispell. "We beat them in the fall by winning the doubles point."

Once again Susanto and Kasiman swept first and second singles, 6-3, 6-1 and 7-5, 6-1, respectively. Also picking up a 9-7 win at third doubles for UB was the duo of Brtko and Emihovich.

The Bulls next competition is Friday, March 30, at the Village Glen, against Ball State, last year's MAC Champions.
