Bulls Down Bucknell

UB men’s tennis team cruises to 6-1 win over the Bison

ST. BONAVENTURE, NY – The University at Buffalo’s men’s tennis team rolled to an easy 6-1 win over Bucknell University this afternoon. The match, originally scheduled for Sunday at UB was moved to St. Bonaventure’s indoor courts to accommodate the visiting Bison (1-10) who fell to the Bonnies, 5-2, earlier in the day.

UB (11-8) took two of three doubles matches to record the opening point. The number one team of Randy Rocchio (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) and Nick Zieziula (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) cruised to an 8-2 win over Nick Denefrio and Gerald DiChiara. UB’s number two squad of Josh Liederman (Queens Village, NY/Benjamin Cardozo) and Rannga Prayudha (Jakarta, Indonesia/ESI International Academy) also recorded an 8-2 win over Todd Jacobs and Asher Salam. The third team of Fery Kasiman (Jakarta, Indonesia/ESI International Academy) and Rohan Raikar (Albany, NY/Albany) fell in their match to Bucknell’s Joe Menezes and Aaron Saperstein, 8-4.

The Bulls took five of the six singles matches, highlighted by Liederman’s thrilling three-set victory over Menezes at number four. After dropping the first set, 6-2, the sophomore rebounded to tie the match with a 6-0 win in the second set and continued his momentum by winning the deciding set by a 6-3 margin.

In other singles action, Kasiman defeated Denefrio, 6-2, 6-2, at number one. Rocchio breezed past Jacobs, 6-2, 6-0, at number two. Prayudha was tested by DiChiara at number five, but pulled out a 7-5, 7-6 win, taking the second set tiebreaker 7-4. Raikar downed Saperstein, 6-2, 6-4, at number six. The lone UB loss was suffered by Zieziula, who fell to Salam, 7-5, 6-3, at number three.

The Bulls, who on Thursday won their first MAC match since joining the league in 1998, will return to league play next weekend hosting Ball State on Friday, March 28 at 6:00 pm at the Village Glen Tennis Center and Northern Illinois next Saturday at 1:00 pm at the University Tennis Center.
