South Carolina Trip Proves Successful

The Bulls went undefeated in three matches in Hilton Head, South Carolina during the spring break away from Buffalo. UB opened with a 4-3 win over Dayton, giving the Bulls a 3-0 mark against Atlantic 10 opponents this season. UB then scored a 7-0 shutout over Division II Bloomsburg. The Bulls also dodged the raindrops and rallied for five singles wins to defeat Denison, 5-1, on Thursday. Their final match, scheduled for Thursday evening against Marist was rained out. UB is now 7-4 overall and winners of five in a row.

The Bulls opened with a dramatic 4-3 victory over the Dayton Flyers. UB relied on the bottom half of its singles lineup to pull out the match, scoring victories in the number four, five and six slots as well as a win at number two. Matt Kennedy (Mississauga, Ontario/Erindale) tied the match at 1-1 as he downed Peyton, 6-1, 7-5. Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside), seeing his first dual-meet action of the season, scored a second-set tiebreaker victory en route to a 6-3, 7-6 (4) in the number six match to give the Bulls a lead they would not relinquish. Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) added to the UB lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win at number two and Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna (NY)) clinched the match for the Bulls at number four. After a tight first set against Downs that Alant took 7-5, the UB junior opened up a 5-0 lead in the second set, winning 6-2 and giving the Bulls their third straight dual-meet triumph.

Against Division III Denison, UB rallied to take five singles matches and led in the sixth before the rain, which had suspended play twice, stopped play for good, but not until after the Bulls had clinched the match. Singh Panthlia clinched the match for the Bulls at the number one slot, but needed three sets (6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3) for the win. Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21), Alant, Stane and Kennedy posted straight set wins while Alejandro Galindo (Torreon, Mexico/Preparatoria Tec) led his match by a set and was on serve in the second set before the rain stopped play.
