DeLAND, FL – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches on Tuesday as the Bulls opened their spring break trip to Florida. UB fell to Big East member Marquette, 5-1, in a morning match and then followed with a 7-0 loss to Stetson, ranked 70th in the latest ITA poll in the afternoon.

Against the Golden Eagles (7-5), the Bulls (4-8) scored a lone singles victory as senior Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) defeated Stephen Shao, 6-3, 6-3, in the number two match. The match was stopped with one singles contest left unfinished as Marquette had clinched the match and the Bulls were slated to play later in the afternoon.

Against Stetson (10-5), UB was forced to play with a diminished lineup as sophomore Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) was unable to play due to illness. Without Stane, UB defaulted the number three doubles and number six singles matches.

Junior Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) put up the strongest fight against the Hatters. In the number two match against Filip Kricka, Singh Panthlia was bested in a second-set tiebreaker, 11-9, dropping the contest in straight sets.

The Bulls head for Jacksonville University for a contest with the homestanding Dolphins on Wednesday. Match time is scheduled for 2:30 pm.
