Bulls Split Florida Trip

The Bulls played a pair of matches during their Spring Break trip to Florida. UB downed Division II ranked Rollins 4-3 in Winter Park, before falling to Mid-American Conference foe Northern Illinois, 7-0 in Orlando. The Bulls are now 3-1 for the spring and 8-6 in 1999-2000.

In the match against Rollins, the Bulls earned the win on the day's final match at fifth singles. Tim Powell (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) rallied from a set down to defeat the Tars' Brian Nelson 3-6, 6-4, 7-6. The match was decided in a grueling 15-13 tiebreaker. Sixth seed Sean Kelley (Gorham, NY/.Marcus Whitman) also rallied from a set down to take his match over Evan Forred in three including a 7-1 tiebreaker to win the final set. Kelley and Powell also combined for a win at third doubles defeating Nelson and Forred 8-4. Picking up singles victories for the Bulls were Fery Kasiman (Jakarta, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) and Justin Brtko (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East).

Neither the weather nor the opposition were kind to the Bulls against Northern Illinois as the match included a three-hour rain delay. UB's bright spots in the match were Budi Susanto (Bali, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) who forced a third set tiebreaker at number one against Brent Sitarski falling 7-5 in the deciding breaker and Powell who forced Nick Gryfakis to three sets before bowing.

UB opens their home spring schedule with a pair of matches this weekend. The Bulls host Eastern Michigan at 7:00 p.m. on March 17 and Niagara on March 18.
