UB Men's Tennis Defeats St. Joseph's, 7-0

Bulls Maintain 10-0 Record; Best Start In School History

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's tennis team continued its spring success with a 7-0 victory over St. Joseph's, in Florida, during its spring trip. The Bulls are now a perfect 10-0, the best start in the team's history.

"We wanted to use our break as a springboard for the upcoming Mid-American Conference matches," said head coach Russ Crispell. "We were able to work on individual weaknesses and then apply that towards our match against St. Joseph's."

Against the Hawks, the Bulls swept the singles competition and also notched victories at first and second doubles for the shutout.

The match began with a victory at first doubles for UB, as senior Budi Susanto (Bali, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) and sophomore Fery Kasiman (Jakarta, Indonesia/Hilton Head Prep) teamed for the 8-6 victory.

The duo of junior captain Justin Brtko (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) and senior Dave Emihovich (Getzville, NY/Williamsville North) notched an 8-5 victory at second doubles, securing the doubles point for the Bulls.

UB would continue its success in singles play, sweeping all six matches.

Susanto started the streak with a 6-4, 6-0 win at first singles over Shawn Farrukh.

Kasiman followed with win at second singles over Mark Spyrzynki, 6-0, 6-3.

Brtko sealed the team victory with the next win for the Bulls at third singles, with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Damon Dennis.

Sean Kelley (Gorham, NY/Marcus Whitman), Emihovich and junior Tim Powell (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) picked up wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles, respectively, to complete the sweep.

"This trip allowed us to do many team-building activities. Throughout our fall season and now in our spring season, there has not been one match where it was an individual effort. Everyone feeds off everyone else," said Crispell.

The Bulls' record is now 10-0, making them UB's only undefeated team this season. The team next kicks off its Mid-American Conference schedule against Toledo at home on Sunday, March 18 at the UB Tennis Center/Village Glen Tennis Center.
