Bulls Go Winless in Chicago and Milwaukee

The University at Buffalo men's tennis team dropped all four of its matches over the weekend as the squad traveled to Chicago and Milwaukee. UB opened with a 7-0 loss at DePaul on Friday night. On Saturday night, the Bulls were stopped by Illinois-Chicago, 5-2. On Sunday, the Bulls traveled to Wisconsin but were unable to change their luck. UB dropped a pair of matches on the final day of the excursion with a 7-0 loss to Marquette and a heartbreaking 4-3 decision against Chicago State.

Senior Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) went 2-2 in singles play over the weekend but was able to reach the 20-victory plateau for the second time in his career. Singh Panthlia opened the weekend with a super-tiebreaker loss to DePaul’s Austin Doerner, snapping an eight-match winning streak, but rebounded for a victory over Illinois-Chicago’s Bastian Harbo in pair of tiebreakers, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4). In Milwaukee, he gained win number 20 against Chicago State’s Prakaso Imanuel, 6-3, 6-0. The 20 wins ties his career best that he set last season when he went 20-13 in singles matches. He remains fourth on UB’s all-time wins list with 58 and Fery Kasiman’s 64 next on the list.

Injury Bug Bites the Bulls

Sophomore Kirill Kolomytes (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) saw limited action on the Midwest road trip. After sitting out the DePaul match, he saw his first and only action of the weekend against Illinois-Chicago. After pairing with Juan Carlos Wynter (Puebla, Mexico/American School) in a doubles loss, he looked to be on his way to a victory in singles against Adriano Liccardo, leading the match 6-1, 2-1. However, a back injury forced him to the sidelines and he was unable to complete the match. He also sat out Sunday’s contests against Marquette and Chicago State. Also missing significant time this season due to an injury has been sophomore Eric Rothstein (Phoenixville, PA/Great Valley). Rothstein saw action in the number five and six singles slots in January but has not been in the lineup since. He posted a 1-3 record in his four singles contests this spring.
