Down Times Down South For Bulls

The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team traveled to the Deep South for its Spring Break matches over the weekend. The Bulls dropped all three contests, falling 4-3 to both Kennesaw State and Mercer in Georgia and concluded with a 7-0 loss to Jacksonville State in Alabama. The Bulls return to Western New York with a 7-5 overall record.

Doubles Duo Scores Weekend Sweep

Although the Bulls lost all three dual meets, UB’s top doubles combination of Marcelo Mazzetto and Kirill Kolomyts won all three of their matches. On Friday, the UB tandem knocked off Kennesaw State’s Michael Langel and Tyler Mills by an 8-2 count. Mazzetto and Kolomyts then picked up a win over Chapman Mitchell and Fernando Armendaris of Mercer by an 8-6 score. They then finished the weekend with an 8-5 win over Jacksonville State’s Gustavo Holz and Bernardo Bachino. With their three wins for the week, Mazzetto and Kolomyts are now 11-5 overall and 7-2 in dual meet competition.

Mazzetto Tops Singles Victors

In singles action, Marcelo Mazzetto won two of three contests at the number one slot. On Friday, he defeated Kennesaw State’s Lawrence Washington in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Mazzetto picked up his 15th singles win of the season on Saturday as he downed Justin Wimpee of Mercer needing to rally after dropping the opening set. Mazzetto prevailed over Wimpee, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. On Sunday, Mazzetto took Scott Robertson of Jacksonville State to three sets falling 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.

Smaniotto Collects First Collegiate Singles Win

Freshman Guilherme Smaniotto was inserted into the singles lineup over the weekend in the number six slot. Smaniotto collected his first career singles win as he knocked off Mark Worsham of Mercer, 7-6, 6-3. Smaniotto went 1-2 over the weekend at number six and is now 1-3 in singles play.
