Bulls Drop Two Matches to End Midwest Trek

MILWAUKEE, WI – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team finished the spring break schedule on Sunday with a pair of losses in Milwaukee. The Bulls fell to Big East foe Marquette, 7-0, on Sunday morning then dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Mid-American Conference opponent Chicago State. The Bulls are now 3-11 overall and 0-2 in MAC competition.

In the opening match against the Golden Eagles, although the Bulls did not win a singles match, there were several close contests. In the number two match, UB's Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) forced a third-set super-tiebreaker before falling to Dusan Medan, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (7).

Against the Cougars, members of the MAC for men's tennis only, the squads were evenly matched, however the Bulls were unable to pull out the final point. UB was swept in the doubles but won three of the six singles matches. Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School), Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) and Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco) each picked up straight-set victories in the number one, three and five matches, respectively.

The deciding point came in the number six match as UB's Ezra Bernstein (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) and Chicago State's Aumir Ahmad went the full three sets. After dropping the opening set, 6-3, Bernstein rallied to take the second set, 6-2, and force the deciding set. The third set was close throughout, however, Bernstein was unable to keep the momentum from the second set and lost 7-5 for the final margin.

UB returns to Western New York for a match on Saturday against George Washington. The match will take place on Saturday, March 15 at St. Bonaventure University.
