Men's Tennis Falls at Illinois-Chicago, 5-2

CHICAGO, IL – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team dropped its second match of the spring break trip with a 5-2 loss at Horizon League member Illinois-Chicago late Saturday night. The Bulls are now 3-9 with two matches remaining on the trip.

The Bulls scored one of three doubles wins, but it was not enough to capture the opening point. UB’s victory came in the number one match as the combination of Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) and Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) defeated UIC’s Sebastian Lystad and Bastian Harbo, 8-4. The Flames took the number two and three matches by identical 8-3 scores to wrap up the doubles point.

In singles play, UB scored a pair of wins at the top and bottom of the ladder. At number one, Singh Panthlia went to a pair of tiebreakers but downed Harbo, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4). In the number six match, freshman Ezra Bernstein (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) defeated Tim O’Brien, 6-4, 6-4.

UB’s Kirill Kolomytes (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) led the number three match against Adriano Liccardo before being forced to retire to due to an injury. Kolomytes had won the opening set, 6-1 and led the second set, 2-1, before play was stopped.

The Bulls conclude the weekend trip with a pair of matches in Milwaukee on Sunday. UB meets Big East member Marquette in a morning matchup. The Bulls will remain on the court for a second match, against Chicago State, a Mid-American Conference member for men’s tennis, in the afternoon contest.
