The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team won both of its matches over the weekend with 6-1 wins over visiting Duquesne and Colgate. The Bulls are now 5-2 overall and have won their last four matches at home, including a 4-3 win over Binghamton to close out the 2008 home slate.

In both matches over the weekend, the Bulls won the opening doubles point as the number three tandem of Octavian Stane and Kristof Custers picked up the clincher both times. Stane and Custers downed Duquesne’s Kyle O’Leary and Gustavo Villares, 8-4, on Friday. Then on Sunday, the duo scored another 8-4 triumph as they defeated Colgate’s Michael Yassky and Jamie Pellechi. Stane and Custers are 3-1 in dual match play this season at the number three slot and are 5-2 when including their fall tournament matches together.

In the Duquesne match, the clinching fourth point was scored by Marcelo Mazzetto, at first singles, as he defeated Jeremy McClelland, 6-4, 6-3. It was sweet revenge for Mazzetto, who had lost to McClelland in three sets when the Bulls and Dukes met last season in Pittsburgh with Duquesne claiming a 4-3 victory. The victory was his 12th singles win of the year and 27th of his career. The 27 wins ties him with Matt Klein and Steve Dahm for 25th place on UB’s singles all-time Division I victories.

Freshman newcomer Tiago Gundum scored the first win of his career for the Bulls as he defeated Colgate’s Jamie Pellechi, 7-5, 6-3, in the sixth singles slot. Gandum moved into the lineup on Sunday after head coach Sherif Zaher decided to move his players up one spot and rest Marcelo Mazzetto following the doubles competition against the Raiders.

Pair of Keystone State Foes in Empire State This Week

The Bulls will take on a couple of opponents from Pennsylvania in non-conference matches this weekend. On Friday, the Bulls will take on Robert Morris at 2:45 pm at the Village Glen Tennis Center. The Bulls hold a 10-1 advantage on the Colonials in the all-time series, including a 6-0 win in Pittsburgh last season. UB then travels to St. Bonaventure for a neutral-site clash with Bucknell (2-1) on Sunday, March 1. The Bulls lead the Bison, 6-2, all-time. The squads met at St. Bonaventure in 2007 in their last clash as UB came away with a 6-1 win.
