Bulls Go Long Into Saturday to Split Matches

The men’s tennis team played well into the night, splitting a pair of matches on Saturday evening. The Bulls (4-2) knocked off Patriot League foe Bucknell, 6-1, but suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Binghamton, one of the top teams in the America East Conference. Both matches were held at the SBU Fitness Center on the campus of St. Bonaventure University.

The Bulls number two tandem of Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) and Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) clinched the doubles point in both matches on Saturday. Rockman and Hadisubroto defeated Jon Bonnet and Pierre Clavel of Binghamton, 8-4, to give the Bulls a 1-0 edge against the Bearcats. The pair then returned to the court to down Bucknell’s Jonathan Brenner and Ryan Sandburg, 9-7. Rockman and Hadisubroto are 4-0 in dual play and 9-3 overall as a doubles team this season.

Three Sets Against Bearcats

Four of the six singles matches against Binghamton went into third sets, with the Bulls only able to claim victory in one of those matches. Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) scored a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Pierre Clavel in the number two match. The number one and four matches included two tiebreakers each as Binghamton took both contests when Rockman lost to Faisal Mohamed at number one in a 6-7 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-2 decision and Hadisubroto fell to Moshe Levy in the number four match, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-6 (7). The fourth match to go the three-set distance was the deciding contest as Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside), playing at number five, opened his contest with Jon Bonnet by scoring a 7-6 first-set tiebreaker to take the lead. However, Stane was unable to build on the momentum and dropped the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-2, closing out the contest.

Singh Panthlia is 12-6 in singles play, including a 5-0 mark in the number two slot and 12-3 in doubles action, 6-0 with Stane.

Another Doubleheader on the Agenda

The Bulls hit the road for another doubleheader this Saturday as they travel to Boston to face Boston College at 10:00 am, followed by a contest against Brown at 7:00 pm. The Eagles are 1-3 after dropping their Atlantic Coast Conference opener to 51st-ranked Virginia Tech on February 11. They also lost a 6-1 decision to Brown, who the Bulls face in the nightcap. The 9-2 Brown Bears are ranked 65th and are currently in Virginia where they knocked off Virginia Tech, 4-3, on Sunday after dropping a 4-3 decision to Louisville on Saturday in Blacksburg. Brown faces number 75 William & Mary on Tuesday before returning north.
