HAMILTION, NY – The University at Buffalo's men's tennis team completed a weekend of travel through New York State with a 6-1 loss to regional rival Colgate Sunday afternoon at Sanford Fieldhouse in Hamilton. The Bulls are now 3-2 overall while the Raiders, who defeated Niagara earlier in the day, improve to 3-2.

UB's lone victory on Sunday came in singles play as Matt Kennedy (Mississauga, Ontario/Erindale) defeated Colgate's Marshall Wheeler, 6-3, 6-3 in the number four match.

The match opened with Colgate claiming all three doubles contests. UB's number one team of Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) and Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) were defeated by Chris Innes and Martin MacIntyre, 8-5. The number two duo of Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) and Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna (NY)) forced a tiebreaker against Wheeler and Mickey Gallagher. However, Rockman and Alant were unable to take the match, falling 7-4 in the tiebreaker, for the 9-8 Colgate decision. UB's number three team of Joe Popielarczyk (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) and Alejandro Galindo (Torreon, Mexico/Preparatoria Tec) fell to Matthew McCormick and Tyler Deck, 8-2.

Aside from Kennedy's win, the Bulls were swept in the singles matches, although two matches went to third sets before the Raiders prevailed. At number one, Rockman fell to Innes, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Singh Panthlia, at number two, forced a third set against Gallagher, but fell 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5. Hadisubroto, at number three, dropped a 6-2, 7-5 decision to MacIntyre. In the number five match, Alant and Deck split the first two sets, with Alant winning the second set, 6-3, to set up the super-tiebreaker. The breaker stayed close throughout before Deck prevailed, 13-11, to close out the match. Fred Duncan (East Amherst, NY/Nichols), playing sixth singles for the Bulls, lost to McCormick, 7-5, 6-2, to close the match.

The Bulls open the home slate on Friday with a day-night doubleheader at the Village Glen Tennis Center. At noon, the Bulls host perennial Mid-American Conference power Western Michigan. The Bulls then tangle with regional rival Cornell in the evening session, starting around 8:00 pm. Western Michigan and Cornell will meet at 4:00 pm.
