Bulls Dump Bucknell Bison, 5-2, in Men’s Tennis Action

UB’s Nick Zieziula ties Fery Kasiman for most career singles wins in Division I era

OLEAN, NY – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team picked up a 5-2 non-conference victory over Bucknell Saturday afternoon at the Olean Racquet Club. The Bulls improved to 3-5 overall, while Bucknell, who also fell to St. Bonaventure, 6-1, earlier in the day is now 0-4.

Buffalo’s Nick Zieziula (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) scored a straight-sets win at first singles to lead the Bulls on Saturday. Zieziula knocked off Bucknell’s Asher Salam, 6-2, 6-4, giving the senior his 64th career singles victory, tying Fery Kasiman (1999-2003) for most wins in UB’s Division I history.

The Bulls also took the lower three singles matches to clinch the win. At fourth singles, Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) defeated Joe Menezes, 6-4, 6-0. At number five, Matt Kennedy (Mississauga, Ontario/Erindale) downed Garrett Neff, 6-3, 6-1. Number six Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna (NY)) beat Matt Pikus, 6-2, 6-0.

UB lost the number two and three singles matches in three sets apiece. At number two, Mike Rockman (Toronto, Ontario/Thornlea) fell to Ira Reibeisen, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6  (3) while number three Josh Liederman (Queens Village, NY/Benjamin Cardozo) dropped a 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-3 match to Nick Denefrio.

The Bulls also picked up the doubles point to open the match by winning two of the three contests. Zieziula and Hadisubroto combined to defeat Denefrio and Salam, 8-4, at number one. At number three, Alant and Kennedy downed Gerald DiChiara and Garrett Neff, 8-5. UB’s number two team of Rockman and Liederman were defeated by Matt Pikus and Reibeisen, 8-6.

The Bulls are next in action on March 6 at Duquense at 8:00 am.
