Bulls Take Aim and Paste Colgate, 5-2
The University at Buffalo men's tennis team scored a 5-2 victory over Colgate University on Saturday afternoon for their second win of the spring. The Bulls (2-6) clinched the match with a pair of doubles victories and four singles wins.
Doubles Helps Bulls Past Raiders
Kirill Kolomytes | The Bulls claimed the doubles point against Colgate for just the second time in eight matches this season with victories at the number one and two matches. In the number one match, UB's Marcello Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) and Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) knocked off Martin MacIntyre and Tyler Deck, 8-6. In the number two match, UB's Kirill Kolomytes (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) and Juan Carlos Wynter (Puebla, Mexico/American School) defeated John Nogueras and Michael Yassky, 9-7. Colgate's Phil Bernasek and Rusian Goussiantnikov prevented a clean sweep by UB by taking the number three match from Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco) and Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside), 8-6.
Singh Panthlia Moves Into Top Five
Nikesh Singh Panthlia | With his win against Colgate, senior Nikesh Singh Panthlia earned his 54th career singles win to move into a three-way tie for fifth place on UB’s all-time victories list. Singh Panthlia tied four-year veteran Bulls Justin Brtko (1998-02) and Yules Hadisubroto (2003-07) with his 54th triumph as he defeated Colgate’s Tyler Deck in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, on Saturday. Next on the list is Mike Proulx’s 1993-97 total of 55 wins. Singh Panthlia’s win total is impressive considering the fact that he played his freshman year at South Carolina-Aiken and his record there is not included with his three-year career at UB. Singh Panthlia is 16-4 overall this season, just two wins shy of his 2005-06 total of 18 and four short of last season’s 20 victories. He is 7-1 in the 2008 spring campaign.
Manhattan and Toledo Come to Town
The Bulls close out February with a pair of home matches this weekend. Defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Manhattan visits on Friday, February 22 at 5:00 pm and Mid-American Conference rival Toledo faces the Bulls on Sunday, February 24 at 1:00 pm. The Jaspers won the MAAC title in 2007 and faced Florida State in the first round of the NCAA Championships last season. The Bulls defeated the Jaspers, 4-3, last season. Toledo is 6-6 this season and the Rockets will face Cleveland State on Friday prior to their meeting with the Bulls. The Bulls fell to Toledo, 5-2, in the regular season finale last year. Both matches will be held at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville.
