HAMILTON, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team scored a 5-2 victory over Colgate University on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls are now 2-6 in dual meet competition while the Raiders remain winless at 0-5.

The Bulls claimed the doubles point to open the match with victories at the number one and two matches. In the number one match, UB's Marcello Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) and Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) knocked off Martin MacIntyre and Tyler Deck, 8-6. In the number two match, UB's Kirill Kolomytes (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) and Juan Carlos Wynter (Puebla, Mexico/American School) defeated John Nogueras and Michael Yassky, 9-7. Colgate's Phil Bernasek and Rusian Goussiantnikov prevented a clean sweep by UB by taking the number three match from Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco) and Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside), 8-6.

The Bulls then quickly scored the necessary three points to clinch the match as Singh Panthlia, Kolomytes and Stane all won in straight sets. Singh Panthlia, at number two, downed Deck, 6-4, 6-4. Kolomytes, at number three, defeated Nogueras, 6-2, 6-0. Stane, at number four, knocked off Bernasek, 6-1, 7-5.

After Stane's victory sealed the match, giving UB a 4-0 lead, UB head coach Sherif Zaher pulled his players off the court in response to the verbal abuse being hurled by a group of Colgate students. After order was restored at Colgate's Sanford Fieldhouse, the Bulls and Raiders continued with the match, splitting the remainder.

Wynter won the number six match for the Bulls, defeating Michael Shea, 6-1, 7-6 (4). In an exhibition contest, UB's Ezra Bernstein (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) defeated Sam Jacobson, 6-3, 7-6 (5). Mazzetto, at number one, and Lluis, at number five, dropped their singles matches.

The Bulls return home next weekend for home matches with Manhattan on Friday, February 22 at 5:00 pm and Mid-American Conference rival Toledo on Sunday, February 24 at 1:00 pm. Both matches will be held at the Village Glen Tennis Center in Williamsville.
