The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team improved to 2-1 for the spring season as the Bulls defeated the visiting Youngstown State Penguins, 5-2, Saturday afternoon at the Village Glen Tennis Center in UB’s home opener. The Bulls swept all three doubles matches and then took the top four of the six singles contests for the victory.
Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad

With Saturday’s doubles sweep, the Bulls have claimed the opening doubles point in two of the three matches this season, winning all three contests against Bryant in the season opener as well. The Bulls changed their combinations on Saturday with
Kirill Kolomyts and
Marcelo Mazzetto scoring an easy 8-2 win at first doubles. The number two tandem of
Mitch Zenaty and
Alexey Kalinin won the deciding point with their 8-5 victory over Tariq Ismail and Christopher Leson. The Bulls gained the sweep after
Octavian Stane and
Kristof Custersrallied from a 5-1 deficit to force a tiebreaker, downing Steve D’Angelo and Robert Emig, 8-6, in the breaker.
Kolomyts Fights for Singles Win
 Kirill Kolomyts |
UB took the top four spots on the singles ladder with Custers, at number four, snaring the deciding point with his 6-0, 6-4 victory over D’Angelo to put the Bulls ahead 4-1. However, the most exciting match was the number two contest as Kolomyts needed to go to a super-tiebreaker against Ismail. After dropping the opening set in a 10-8 tiebreaker, Kolomyts rallied for a 6-4 win to set up the super-tiebreaker and the eventual win, again by a 10-8 margin. Kolomyts remained perfect for the spring with his third singles win against no defeats and also is 3-0 in doubles play.
