Bulls End Cornell Duals With Pair of Wins

UB men's tennis team takes two of three in final two days of play

ITHACA, NY - The University at Buffalo men's tennis team completed the Cornell Duals with a 2-2 record for the four-match weekend. After falling to Cornell on Friday, UB knocked off Bucknell, 6-1, and Villanova, 5-2, in Saturday's action, but fell to St. John's, 5-2 to complete the weekend. For the season, the Bulls are 5-4 in dual meets.

Against Bucknell, the UB doubles duo of Nick Zieziula (Hamburg, NY/St. Francis) and Rohan Raikar (Albany, NY/Albany) rolled past Aaron Saperstein and Don Whaley, 6-2, 6-1, to earn two points. UB then won four of the five singles matches. Fery Kasiman (Jakarta, Indonesia/ESI International Academy) defeated Leland Tien, 6-4, 6-2, at number one. At number two, Josh Liederman (Queens Village, NY/Benjamin Cardozo) rallied from a set down to defeat Nick Denefrio, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Rangga Prahudha (Jakarta, Indonesia/ESI International Academy) also rallied to defeat Joe Menzes, 4-6, 6-0, 10-8 at number four. Joe Popielarczyk (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) earned a straight-set win over Garrett Neff at number five, 6-2, 6-2. The only blemish on the UB effort was Randy Rocchio (East Amherst, NY/Williamsville East) falling to Asher Salam, 6-1, 6-4, at number three.

Against Villanova, the Bulls dropped the doubles point as Raikar and Popielarczyk fell in three sets to Lucas Kaster and John Toppel, 6-7, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8 in the tiebreaker). UB's singles players took all five victories including Zieziula rallying from two game-points to defeat Ricardo Baraldi at number four, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0. Kasiman scored a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Brad Adams at number one. Liederman defeated Aaron Kusza, 6-2, 6-3, at number two. Rocchio rebounded with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Ryan Devine at number three and Prahudha knocked off Carl Fenzl, 6-4, 6-3, at number five.

UB finished the weekend against St. John's winning the match's doubles point as Zieziula and Rocchio defeated Morgan Baner and Boris Chiporukha, 6-2, 6-0. UB dropped all five singles matches with Kasiman falling in three sets to Arnaud Agniel, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. The remainder of the matches were straight set victories for the Red Storm, although the Bulls put up some strong efforts. Liederman fell to Rick Ferreira at number two, 6-4, 7-5. Raikar was defeated by Jonathan Skinner, 6-2, 7-5, at number three. Ivan Chamdani (Jakarta, Indonesia/ESI International Academy) fell to Jake Maxwell, 6-1, 6-3, at number four and Prahudha lost at number five to Nick Stocker, 6-4, 6-3.

UB is next in action on February 19 when they host Rochester at 4:00 pm.
