The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team lost a tough 4-3 decision to Cornell at the Reis Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls scored victories at the top three singles positions but were unable to pull out the team win.

Top Three Score Singles Wins

Picking up singles wins for the Bulls were Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School), Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) and Kirill Kolomytes (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155).

Playing first singles, Singh Panthlia scored a straight-set win over Kyle Doppelt, needing a first-set tiebreaker, to ensure the win, 7-6 (4), 6-2. Mazzetto also scored a first-set tiebreaker win (9-7) in downing Rory Heggie, 7-6 (7), 6-3 in the number two match. Kolomytes needed a full three sets to down Marc Asch, rallying from a first-set loss to win 2-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Joining the Bulls for the spring season, freshman Juan Carlos Wynter (Puebla, Mexico/American School) made his debut against Cornell on Saturday. Wynter comes to UB after having been ranked number two in Mexico among players 18-and-under and playing in three national finals. Wynter and doubles partner Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco) formed the number three combination for the Bulls while Wynter made his singles debut in the number five slot.

Niagara, St. Bonaventure Come to Town

The Bulls open their home schedule on Friday, February 8 with a 5:00 pm match against Niagara at the newly-renovated Village Glen Tennis Center. UB then faces another regional rival, St. Bonaventure, on Sunday, February 10 at 11:00 am, also at the Village Glen. The Bulls hold a 93-3-1 all-time mark against the Purple Eagles. The margin with the Bonnies is nearly as impressive as the Bulls have a 36-17 edge over their Southern Tier rival.
