In the opener against the Bryant Bulldogs, playing in their first year as a Division I program, the Bulls scored seven wins in the nine matches. UB won the doubles point with a pair of wins including a 7-4 tiebreaker win in the third match as Kristof Custers (Balen, Belgium/European School of Mol) and Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco) prevailed over Nicholai Hill and Zehn Laliwala. In singles play, the Bulls took the top five contests, all in straight sets, with Custers picking up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Thomas Nowak in the fourth singles contest. Kirill Kolomyts (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) allowed just two games against him as he rolled in the number two match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Kevin Gardiner.

Bitten by the Brown Bears

On Sunday, the Bulls traveled to Providence to face Brown, one of the top teams in the Ivy League. The Bulls won one doubles and one singles match against the Bears. The team of Kolomyts and newly-signed Alexey Kalinin defeated Jonathan Pearlman and Nathaniel Gorham, 8-6, in the number two contest. Kolomyts was the lone singles winner, defeating Chris Lee at number two, in a third-set supertiebreaker.

With his two singles wins over the weekend, Kirill Kolomyts moved past John Lavere for 15th place on UB’s all-time singles victory chart. Kolomyts is now 34-25 on the singles court and is just eight wins away from reaching the top ten. Kolomyts is 13-3 in singles play this season.

Penguins Come to Town

The Bulls (1-1) next host Youngstown State on Saturday, February 7 at 10:00 am at the Village Glen Tennis Center for the home opener. The Bulls hold a 9-2 series advantage over the Penguins, having last faced Youngstown in the 2000-01 season. The teams are familiar with each other from earlier this season when both squared off at the St. Bonaventure Invitational. The Bulls won three of five singles matches and swept the three doubles contests from the Penguins in the opening weekend of the fall schedule.
