Bulls Open Spring Season With Split in NYC

Although there’s plenty of snow and ice on the ground, the University at Buffalo men’s tennis team began play on its spring schedule over the weekend with a pair of matches in metropolitan New York City. On Thursday, the Bulls opened with a 7-0 loss to St. John’s, but rebounded with an impressive performance to defeat Manhattan, 4-3, on Friday. The Bulls are now 2-1 in dual matches for the 2006-07 campaign.

The Bulls pulled out a win over Manhattan on Friday with senior Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN 21) scoring the clinching victory in a three-set shootout. With the rest of the matches completes, UB and the Jaspers were tied at 3-3. Hadisbroto opened play against Manhattan’s Filip Szymik with a 6-3 win in the first set. However, he was unable to hold on to the momentum and dropped a second-set tiebreaker, 8-6, to force the final set. In the third set, Hadisubroto trailed 3-0 before rallying to take seven of the next nine games and score a 7-5 win in the set.

Who’s the New Guy?

After playing with six players on the roster, and usually only five healthy bodies during the fall, the Bulls gained some depth over the holiday break with the addition of Kirill Kolomytes (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) to the squad. Kolomytes immediately was inserted into the lineup, playing third singles and second doubles. He combined with Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) for two doubles wins over the weekend, including a 9-7 victory over Manhattan’s Peter Czink and Mihai Nichifor on Friday.

Raiders and Dukes Come to Town

The Bulls get a rest this weekend but hit the court again on February 4 as they host both Colgate and Duquesne at the Village Glen Tennis Center. The Bulls are slated to face the Raiders at 1:00 pm with the Dukes taking the court against the Bulls at 5:00 pm.
