Bulls Open Spring Slate With Split in New England
UB's men's tennis team opened the spring portion of the schedule with
a 6-1 win over Boston University and a 7-0 loss to a very tough Brown squad
in the team's weekend matches. The Bulls are 2-1 in dual-meet competition.
Singles Roll Over Terriers for the Win
 Yules Hadisubroto |
Against Boston University on Friday, the Bulls picked up the
doubles point to take a 1-0 lead, then allowed the Terriers to tie the match with
a victory at second singles. Then UB blitzed past their opponents in the
remainder of the singles showdowns to emerge with the 6-1 victory.
Fred Duncan (East Amherst,
NY/Nichols), a freshman transfer from Saint Joseph's
playing in his first UB match, scored a 6-3, 6-4 win over Guilio Gallarotti at
number four.
Mike Rockman (Toronto,
Ontario/Thornlea), at number one, then
came off the court with a 7-6 (2), 6-0 victory against Barrett Wolf, giving the Bulls
a 3-1 advantage in the match. UB clinched the win by claiming the fourth
point as number three
Yules Hadisubroto (Jakarta, Indonesia/SMUN
21) rallied from a set down against Miron Nesim and some mild cramping to claim a
3-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory. The Bulls also won the number five and six matches to
post the 6-1 margin.
Matt Kennedy (Mississauga, Ontario/Erindale)
needed a super-tiebreaker to down Karim Zahran, at number five, 7-6 (2), 1-6, 1-0
(10-1) while
Albert Alant (Pretoria, South Africa/Niskayuna
(NY)), at number six, cruised to a straight-set win over Hans Sapra, 6-4, 6-3.
Kennedy Sees Extended Play in Both Matches
 Matt Kennedy |
Matt Kennedy, playing fifth singles, was the only UB player to avoid falling in two sets against Brown on Saturday. His
match against Sam Garland was decided in a super-tiebreaker. Garland opened the match by winning the first set, 6-2, before Kennedy
rallied to take the second set in a tiebreaker. The two battled in the super-tiebreaker, Kennedy's second in less than 24 hours, before
Garland pulled out a 10-8 decision for the Bears.
Squad Goes For Double Duty in Next Action
The Bulls are taking this week off from competition. UB is back in action on February 5 when it travels to West Point for a pair
of matches. The Bulls will take on the Black Knights at 9:00 am and then face Binghamton on the neutral courts at 3:00 pm.
The matchup with the Bearcats is a makeup from a postponement in Binghamton during the fall campaign.
