GOLD RIVER, CA – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team dropped its second match of a three-match California excursion Sunday afternoon with a 4-3 loss to Sacramento State at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club. The Bulls are 0-2 in dual meet play following losses to San Francisco and the Hornets.

The Bulls fell behind early as the Hornets grabbed the doubles point with victories in all three matches. At the number one slot, UB’s Kirill Kolomytes (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) and Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) fell to Anton Stryhas and Kiryl Harbatsiuk in a 10-8 tiebreaker. UB’s Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) and Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside), at number two, fell to Artur Klimenka and Holden Ching, 8-3. UB’s number three duo of Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio de Tabasco Americano) and Eric Rothstein (Phoenixville, PA/Great Valley) lost to Sven-David Rueff and Ronan Conlon, 8-2.

UB scored singles wins from its number two, four and six players. Kolomytes, at number two, defeated Klimenka, 6-3, 7-5. Stane, in the number four slot, needed a 12-10 win in the super-tiebreaker to defeat Ching, 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10). Rothstein, at number six, got off to a slow start, needing a first-set tiebreaker win, but rolled in the second set for a 7-6 (7), 6-0 win over Conlon.

Singh Panthlia, at number one, fell to Harbatsiuk, 6-2, 6-2. Mazzetto was defeated in the number three match by Stryhas, 6-2, 6-2. Lluis fell to Rueff, 6-2, 6-3 in the number five contest.

The match served as a homecoming for UB head coach Sherif Zaher, a Sacramento State graduate and former head coach of the Hornets. Zaher was the Big Sky MVP in 2001 and 2002 for the Hornets and led the squad as head coach from 2002-05.

UB finishes the three-match trip through the Golden State with a contest at UC-Davis on Monday.
