Men's Tennis Opens Spring Campaign With 5-2 Loss to Dons

Nikesh Singh Panthlia, Marcelo Mazzetto earn wins for Bulls

SAN FRANCISCO, CA – The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team opened the spring portion of the schedule Saturday with a 5-2 loss to the University of San Francisco.

The Bulls were swept in the doubles portion of the match. UB’s top duo of Nikesh Singh Panthlia (George Town, Malaysia/BMK Penang Free School) and Kirill Kolomytes (Moscow, Russia/Moscow High School 155) fell to Thong Tu and Einar Hart, 8-6. The number two team of Alexis Lluis (Mexico City, Mexico/Colegio Americano de Tabasco) and Marcelo Mazzetto (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Carlos Magno) were defeated by Greg Horn and Rainer Nachbauer, 8-2. The number three duo of Eric Rothstein (Phoenixville, PA/Great Valley) and Octavian Stane (Toronto, Ontario/Leaside) fell to Mitch Del Rosario and Torin Ching, 8-2.

In singles action, UB scored a pair of victories. Singh Panthlia knocked off Asaf Cohen in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Mazzetto provided UB’s other victory with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Nachbauer.

The remainder of the matches went to the Dons. Kolomytes fell to Tu, 6-2, 6-2 and Lluis dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Ching. A pair of matches went the full three sets but UB was unable to score a win. Stane lost to Hart, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 and Rothstein went the distance with Del Rosario before falling 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.

The Bulls (0-1) remain in California for two more matches to open the spring season. UB travels to Sacramento State on Sunday and UC-Davis on Monday.
