UB men's tennis player ranked 107th nationally and sixth in Northeast Region

BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo men's tennis player Wojciech Starakiewicz has been named to the first national and regional rankings lists of the 2009-10 season released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association this week. He is the first men's tennis player in UB's Division I history to attain a ranking.
Starakiewicz, a sophomore in his first season with the Bulls after transferring from Tulsa, is ranked 107th nationally and sixth in the Northeast Region. He is the only player from the Mid-American Conference to be included on the national list while players from Division I programs in New York, New Jersey and New England are included in the Northeast Region.
In his two fall tournament appearances, Starakiewicz went 5-1, picking up three victories in the season-opening St. Bonaventure Invitational to claim the title at first singles. He reached the A flight semifinals at the Princeton Invitational with a pair of wins, including a three-set victory over the tournament's top seed, Columbia's Mihal Nichifor. Nichifor is ranked seventh on the Northeast list.
Starakiewicz was awarded a number five seed for the ITA Regional championships, the highest ever for a UB player, but was unable to compete due to illness.
The Bulls open dual meet competition on January 23 and 24 when they travel to Rhode Island to face Brown and Bryant.
