Andrew Tamchyna Back, IM Sophomore Newmarket, Ontario Newmarket

2006-07: Earned UB’s Most Improved award. Finished fifth in the 200 backstroke (1:52.61) at the MAC Championships. Set a lifetime-best of 1:51.63 in the prelims of the 200 backstroke. Won the consolation final (ninth overall) in the 100 backstroke in 52.15. Placed 14th in the 400 IM (season-best 4:17.08). Swam the opening backstroke leg of UB’s fourth-place finishing 400-medley relay at the MAC meet.

High School: Graduated from Newmarket High School. Participated for 12 years with the Newmarket Stingrays Swim Club program for head coach Alan Swanston. Reached the finals of the Junior Nationals, finishing seventh in the 200-meter backstroke in 2006. Finished fourth in the 100-meter backstroke at the provincial meet.

Personal: Born August 5, 1988. Son of Karel and Radka Tamchyna. Has one sister (Cathy). Favorite athlete is Dominik Hasek. Favorite food is roast pork with dumplings and sauerkraut. Lists Christopher Walken as his non-sports hero. Majoring in engineering physics.
