Bulls Drown Purple Eagles, 128-95

UB diver Patrick Lee breaks school one-meter record

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team rolled to an easy 128-95 non-conference victory over Niagara Thursday night at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The Bulls earned their first win of the season to improve to 1-2 overall while the Purple Eagles fell to 1-7.

UB freshman diver Patrick Lee (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) swept the one- and three-meter competitions. Lee scored a six-dive total of 308.93 on the one-meter board to win the event and break the school record of 305.55 set by Brian Baggett in 1991. The freshman had previously turned in a top one-meter score of 271.50 at the Pittsburgh Invitational last month.Lee also scored a six-dive total of 304.80 on the three-meter board to easily outdistance the competition.

Sophomore Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward) won two events in the pool for the Bulls. Sy took the 1000 freestyle in a season-best time of 9:46.13. The time is also the fastest mark turned in by a Bull in the event this year. Sy also placed first in the 100 butterfly in 52.89 as UB swept the top three places in the race. Alan Lowe (Brownsville, TX/Hanna) and Chris Vaughan (Fairport, NY/Desert Vista) took second and third, respectively, in 53.94 and 54.90.

Lowe was also victorious in the 200 freestyle in 1:48.16 and teamed with Kurt Bessel (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy), Aviv Oren (Rishon Le-Zion, Israel/Makif A') and Jason Cotter (Oswego, NY/Oswego) to win the 400 medley relay in 3:35.73.

Vaughan, Oren and Cotter also swept the top three spots in the 50 freestyle with Vaughan taking the race in 22.34, touching out Oren by four-hundreths of a second (22.38). Cotter finished in 22.62.

Other winners for UB included Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) in the 200 individual medley (1:58.90), Jon Yarger (Centre Hill, PA/Penns Valley) in the 100 freestyle (49.48) and Cotter in the 500 freestyle (4:48.84).

Niagara's Kevin Klein won the 100 backstroke in 54.60.

The Bulls and Purple Eagles meet again at Niagara for a January 14 meet, starting at 6 pm.
