McDowell Wins Second MAC Swimmer of the Week Award
McDowell swept both the one- and three-meter diving events at last weekend's Zippy Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron. In Friday's three-meter competition, McDowell broke his own meet mark with 335.65 points for his six dives in the final round to win the event and eclipse the mark of 332.40 he posted at last year’s meet for the pool and meet record. It was the third consecutive year that a UB men’s diver has set the pool record for the three-meter event. Cassidy Lynch set the record at the 2005 event. McDowell went on to break Lynch’s pool and meet marks in winning the one-meter event with 303.05 points on Saturday. McDowell was the lone entrant to surpass the 300-point barrier as he won the competition by 27.25 points over Niagara freshman Ian O'Rourke (275.80). This is the second time that McDowell has been recognized by the MAC as its top male athlete. He also took the award on October 24. The Bulls have won four Men's Swimmer of the Week awards this season with Connor Vander Zalm (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna) and Zach Ruske (Superior, CO/Monarch) winning the honor once apiece. Combined with the women's team, UB swimmers have picked up the MAC's top swimmer award seven times this season. The Bulls are next in action on January 11 at Binghamton. |
