Bulls Finish Sixth at Akron's SummaCare Invitational

The men's swimming and diving team finished sixth at the SummaCare Invitational, hosted by the University of Akron, over the weekend. UB scored 892 points in the three-day meet. St. Bonaventure won the team title with 1,630.5 points. Xavier, Clarion, Duquesne and Mid-American Conference rival Ohio also fielded men's squads at the meet. The Bulls tallied sixteen lifetime-best marks in the three-day competition.

Freshman Cassidy Lynch (Westminster, CO/Legacy) scored a pair of diving victories over the weekend, sweeping the one- and three-meter competitions, setting meet and facility records in both events. On Friday, Lynch won the three-meter diving event with 316.35 points. The previous record of 286.90 was set in 2002 by former UB diver Patrick Lee. Lynch completed his run with meet and Ocasek Natatorium records to win the one-meter title on Saturday with a six-dive total of 296.90 points to easily take the event ahead of three Clarion divers. The total established a new pool record, which had stood since 1998 and broke the meet mark by more than 15 points.

Hurst Reaches Championship Finals in Three Events

Senior Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) posted impressive numbers for Buffalo over the weekend, reaching the championship race in three events. On Friday, he opened with a fourth-place finish in the 200 individual medley in 1:56.21. On Saturday, he took third in the 400 individual medley in 4:07.61, posting a lifetime-best in the race. He completed the weekend with a seventh-place finish in the 200 backstroke in 1:58.54.

Junior Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) reached the championship finals in both backstroke races. On Saturday, Adams posted a fourth-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 52.86. He improved to a third-place showing in his specialty event, the 200 backstroke, finishing in a season-best 1:53.83. Adams' mark is the fastest 200 backstroke time in the Mid-American Conference this season. Also, freshman Richard Shi (Ottawa, Ontario/Merivale) reached the championship final in both races. Shi finished sixth in the 100 backstroke in 53.86 while again placing sixth in the 200 backstroke in 1:55.89. Both marks established new lifetime bests.

Relayers Impressive in Pair of Races

The Bulls also posted a pair of strong relay finishes in the final two days of the meet. The UB foursome of Mike Gerlach (Penfield, NY/Penfield), Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) and Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) finished third in the 800 freestyle relay, clocking a 6:59.21 showing. In the final event of the meet, Sunday's 400 freestyle relay, UB's combo of Adams, Gerlach, Gatley and Jeff Hurst took fourth place in 3:10.04, bettering UB's season-best in the event by more than five seconds. Adams' opening leg of the relay was a lifetime-best for the 100 freestyle.

Sixteen Lifetime Bests in Ohio

The Bulls tallied sixteen lifetime-best marks in the three-day competition. Joining Lynch, Jeff Hurst, Adams and Shi in the lifetime-best marks was sophomore Mike Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) who scored one in the 200 butterfly with a 1:57.21 in the prelimary round, bettering his previous best, set earlier this season by three seconds. For the season, the Bulls have posted 25 lifetime bests.

Another Long Layoff Awaits

The SummaCare meet was the first competition for the Bulls in more than a month. The team now faces another long layoff as the final exam schedule and Christmas holidays dot the December docket. UB is next in action on January 12, 2006 against crosstown rival Canisius. UB then hosts another local rival, Niagara, January 18, in the Bulls' home finale.
