Bulls Finish Fourth At Penn State

The University at Buffalo men's swimming team finished fourth of four squads at the Nittany Lion Invitational. Host and 20th ranked Penn State won the three-day meet with 1,040.5 points while UMBC was second with 933, St. Bonaventure, third at 826 and UB fourth at 514.5.

The Bulls picked up strong performances in the 400 individual medley as UB placed two swimmers in the A final. Jason McLachlan (Arvada, CO) placed third in a lifetime best of 4:03.33 while teammate Eric Stimson (North Tonawanda, NY) was fourth in 4:09.99. McLachlan also placed second in the 1650 freestyle in another lifetime best of 16:04.49.

Stimson finished second in the 200 backstroke in 1:51.37, sixth in the 100 backstroke in 52.49 and tenth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.68. He was also part of the 200 medley relay squad along with Mike Szyprowski (Grand Island, NY), Peter Zeitler (Amherst, NY) and Tony Lizauckas (Kenmore, NY) that placed sixth in 1:38.92.

The 800 free relay squad of McLachlan, Josh Pun (Edmonton, Alb.), Stimson and Zeitler put up UB's best relay showing of the meet finishing third in 6:58.29.

In Friday's opening session, the Bulls picked up a pair of fifth place finishes from McLachlan in the 500 freestyle in 4:40.46 and Dexter Tatum (Gainesville, GA) in the 200 individual medley in 1:57.91. Tatum was also fourth in the 200 butterfly in 1:56.43 in Sunday's final day of competition while Pun was third in the event in 1:55.79.

Freshman Jimmy Mulvey (Monroe-Woodbury, NY) Pun, McLachlan and Tatum combined to take fourth in the 400 free relay in 3:13.19.

Freshman diver Jim Taravella (Orchard Park, NY) placed seventh in both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions.

Up Next

The Bulls are next in action Thursday, December 7 against Niagara at Alumni Natatorium at 6:00 pm. UB defeated the Purple Eagles earlier this season 184-57.
