Yarger, Lee Post Opening Night Wins

UB men stand fourth after first night of Giant Eagle Zippy Invitational

AKRON, OH - The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team scored a pair of victories in the opening night of 2004 Giant Eagle Zippy Invitational to place the Bulls in fourth place among eight teams. UB collected 343.5 points to hold on to the fourth spot. Ball State (517), St. Bonaventure (494) and Clarion (429.5) occupy the top three spots with Xavier (310), Ohio (252), Duquesne (208) and Hiram (48) trailing the Bulls.

UB picked up a swim victory and a diving win in the opening events. Buffalo's Jon Yarger (Centre Hall, PA/Penns Valley) cruised to a win in the 500 freestyle. Yarger took the race in 4:41.37, the identical time he clocked in the preliminary round as the fastest swimmer in the morning session. He finished more than a second ahead of Ball State's Ryan Bowman (4:42.45). UB's Luke Adams (Quinnesec, MI/Kingsford) finished seventh in the race in 4:50.07. Dustin Hui (Gardner, MA/Gardner) won the C final in 4:55.80 to finish 17th overall.

Junior diver Patrick Lee (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) picked up a victory on the three-meter board. Lee scored 452.05 points for 11 dives to easily win the competition by more than 20 points over Ohio's Rick Wade.

The Bulls placed three in the championship final of the 200 individual medley. Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena) scored a fourth-place finish in in 1:55.25. Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) was seventh in 1:57.02 and Erik Schwarz (Fairport, NY/Fairport) placed eighth in 1:57.65.

UB's 400 medley relay team scored a fifth-place finish as the foursome of Hurst, Geoff Wells (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) , Sy and Schwarz touched the wall in 3:30.43. The Bulls also posted a seventh-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay as Hurst, Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), Sy and Schwarz finished in 1:26.58.

Competition concludes Sunday.
