Bulls Complete Purdue Invitational With Seventh-Place Finish
WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - The University at Buffalo men's swimming and diving team completed the three-day Purdue Invitational on Sunday with a seventh-place overall finish. UB scored 196 points in the meet while the host Boilermakers won the team title with 736 points. Northwestern (691.50), Iowa (589.50), Southern Illinois (556), Wyoming (405) and Ohio State (302) finished ahead of the Bulls. Wabash College scored 22 points, competing only on Sunday, to finish eighth. UB's Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward CSS) was the top finisher in Sunday's events. Sy won the consolation final of the 200 butterfly in 1:52.47 to place ninth overall. Sy set a lifetime-best in the preliminaries with a 1:52.39 clocking, and breaking his own record of 1:52.56 in the process. Juniors Geoff Wells (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne) and Aviv Oren (Rishon Le-Zion, Israel/Makif A') finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 200 breaststroke. Wells cut five seconds off his previous lifetime-best with a 2:07.41 finish. Oren touched next in 2:08.39. UB's remaining points were scored in the meet's final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The foursome of Oren, Sy, Kevin Gatley (Charlton, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and Jon Yarger (Centre Hill, PA/Penns Valley) placed 12th in 3:13.21, after turning in a season-best 3:12.98 in the preliminaries. The Bulls will send several individuals to the upcoming U.S. Open in Federal Way, WA,
starting on Deccember 4. UB's next dual meet is January 10 when they host Canisius. |
