UB Men Stand Fifth at Pitt InvitePITTSBURGH, PA - The University at Buffalo's men's swimming and diving team stands fifth after the first day of the 2002 Pittsburgh Invitational at Trees Pool at the University of Pittsburgh. The Bulls scored 54 points in the opening night finals as Pittsburgh won all five events contested. The Panthers lead the five-team meet with 482 points with Texas A&M in second with 312. Michigan State and Connecticut round out the field. UB freshman diver Patrick Lee (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) turned in an impressive effort in the three-meter competition. Lee placed fifth with a total of 422.75 points, finishing behind a pair of divers from each from Texas A&M and Pittsburgh. Lee improved on his preliminary score of 395.70, which was also fifth-best in the session. The Bulls also picked up points from their relay teams. UB's top 200 free relay team of Chris Vaughan (Fairport, NY/Desert Vista), Jeff Hurst (Rochester, NY/Greece-Athena), Dave Richards (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) and Aviv Oren (Rishon Le-Zion, Israel/Makif A') placed ninth in 1:26.64. The B squad of Eric Schwarz (Fairport, NY/Fairport), Kurt Bessel (Mexico, NY/Mexico Academy), Dustin Hui (Gardner, MA/Gardner) and Evan McCormack (Webster, NY/Webster) finished 14th in 1:31.73. The 400 medley relay teams placed 12th and 14th for the Bulls. UB's A squad of Richards, Oren, Mark Sy (Scarborough, Ontario/Mary Ward) and Hurst finished in 3:34.64, bettering the team's season-best of 3:36.04. B squad members Bessel, Schwarz, Alan Lowe (Brownsville, TX/Hanna) and Jon Yarger (Centre Hill, PA/Penns Valley) finished in 3:36.38. Freshman Jason Cotter (Oswego, NY/Oswego) won the C final in the 500 freestyle, finishing 17th overall. Cotter turned in a 4:42.86 clocking, bettering his preliminary time of 4:49.50 and his earlier season-best of 4:58.79. Hurst and Sy finished 21st and 22nd respectively in the 200 IM. Hurst finished in a season-best 1:57.23 while Sy in his first 200 IM race of the season finished in 1:58.05 after clocking a 1:57.57 in the preliminary round. Competition continues through Sunday. |
